All About Piezo Nose Job (Rhinoplasty)

What comes to mind first when you think of rhinoplasty? Open, closed, protective, tipplasty, belt… have you ever heard of piezo rhinoplasty?

If you haven't heard, let's tell you right away, and let's talk about this technique, which is said to be very reasonable in terms of bruising and edema.

ENT Specialist Turgay Ercan Tunc MD gives information about this subject:

What is Piezo Rhinoplasty?

piezzo rhinoplasty“Piezo rhinoplasty, which is the technical name of ultrasonic rhinoplasty, is performed with the help of a device that uses ultrasonic waves to reshape the nasal bones, without using hammers and chisels.

In this way, it provides more sensitivity and reduces the risk of less trauma and soft tissue damage compared to traditional rhinoplasty techniques.

Working with ultrasonic energy called Pizom, the device focuses only on the bone without damaging the soft tissue. This leads to less bruising and edema and shortens the recovery period.”

How is Piezo Rhinoplasty Performed?

piezzo rhinoplasty performed“Piezo rhinoplasty, hammer etc. used in rhinoplasty in the classical sense. avoids the use of materials and incisions. Instead, the pizome device is used to reshape and shrink the nasal bones.

With the help of this device, also called a piezotome, the bone structure is shaped with ultrasonic energy without damaging the soft tissue.”

What are the Advantages of Piezo Rhinoplasty?

advantages of piezo rhinoplastyENT Specialist Turgay Ercan Tunç MD stated that there are many advantages of piezo rhinoplasty, but this will vary according to the ability to use the device and listed the advantages as follows:

  • “Piezo rhinoplasty is actually a technique that provides more sensitivity and is more gentle than others.

  • There is less swelling and bruising on the nose job, and some patients even notice that there is almost no bruising.

  • While the hammer and chisel technique, which is frequently used in the intervention of the nasal bone, may cause some fragmentation and unintentional fracture of the bone, this is prevented in piezo rhinoplasty.

  • It allows shaping the nose in a way that is not possible even with thin rasps. In some cases, even breaking the nasal bones can be prevented.

  • The technique is also well suited to the modern trend of conservative rhinoplasty, the philosophy of reshaping tissue rather than destroying it, so common in old-fashioned rhinoplasty techniques.

  • Piezotome device can be used to reshape the bone without breaking it, as well as to protect the bridge of the nose.”

In Which Situations Is Piezo Nose Job Applied?

piezoENT Specialist Turgay Ercan Tunç MD explained the candidates who are suitable for piezo rhinoplasty and in which situations this technique can be used:

“The piezotome device used in piezo rhinoplasty is designed for shaping the nasal bone. For this reason, patients who only require reduction or adjustment in the nasal bones are suitable for piezo rhinoplasty.

In summary, this technique can provide reduction of bone hump, adjustment of bone aberrations or bone irregularities, and narrowing of the bone mid-dome.

The technique is not suitable for nasal tip and cartilage corrections, which are generally performed using suture and graft techniques.

The piezotome does not cut or reshape cartilage as only the high bone density allows for energy transmission. Therefore, if you only need tip surgery, the piezotome is not suitable.

Another important factor to consider is that piezo rhinoplasty must be performed with an open approach and cannot be used with a closed or intranasal approach.

This is because the instruments are not long enough and direct visualization of the bones is necessary for piezo bone shaping.”

What are the Points to Consider Before and After Piezo Rhinoplasty?

before and after piezo rhinoplasty“What needs to be done after the surgery is not different from before and after a classical rhinoplasty. There is little or no pain. There is also significantly less bruising.

A nasal splint is required to hold the nasal bones in place during the initial recovery period. This splint is removed after about 1 week.

During removal of the splint, most patients will notice minimal or no bruising. However, it should be noted that it may take about a year to see the final result after full recovery, as a number of different structures are changed during rhinoplasty.

Unfortunately there is no quick way to the final result, but there are many benefits in the early recovery period and the quality of the results achieved.”

Which Doctor Should I Prefer for the Best Piezo Rhinoplasty?

doctors for rhinoplasty“Piezo rhinoplasty is not a very common practice because most surgeons are not familiar with this advanced form of equipment and may not be able to combine standard rhinoplasty techniques with Piezotome technology.

It is also possible that they did not include the Piezotome device, since it is expensive.

For this reason, I recommend that you choose an experienced surgeon who knows how to use the piezotome device professionally and who has done many operations with this device.”
